Aimed at TB-enabled Macs, future PCs

ATTO Technology has unveiled the beginnings of a full lineup of Thunderbolt breakout boxes that allow TB-enabled Macs and future Windows or Linux systems that incorporate Thunderbolt to use devices that leverage SAS/SATA storage, Fibre Channel and even 10Gb Ethernet to increase the adaptability and flexibility of Intel's high-speed bi-directional connector. The company will be showcasing the products at the upcoming NAB conference.
The line is divided into two types of products: ThunderLink, which functions as direct converters to enterprise-class storage, and ThunderStream products that add a storage controller for RAID functionality to help users achieve the highest possible I/O and data throughput rates (6Gb and higher), well above what Firewire and USB can provide. The Thunderlink products are aimed more at medical imaging and video rendering uses, while the Thunderstream is intended for advanced video applications and data centers.

The four ThunderLink products, which all offer a transfer rate of 800MB per second, include a dual Fibre Channel unit (FC 1082), a dual SAS/SATA unit (SH 1068), a dual 10Gb Ethernet unit (NT 1102) and a similar unit with just one 10Gb Ethernet output using an SFC+ connector. The Thunderstream external unit offered features eight 6Gb per second SAS/SATA outputs (SC 3808D), while an OEM-only internal card (SC 3808E) duplicates the functionality of the SC 3808D in systems with internal PCIe slots.

Prices and availability have not yet been announced, but NAB attendees can visit ATTO at their booth. The display includes a ThunderStream embedded unit working with a linear tape file system array.
