Many tourists that travel to the U.S. or any nearby countries, always end up watching a Hulu program. Hulu program is such a nice service available tot eh resident of the United States, it is a program that lets you watch programs over the internet, some of the shows that are available on that service include Lost, House, Dollhouse or Modern Family and many more which unfortunately are not yet available in Australia, some of the reason being the IP issues or licensing rules. For the Australian people that have watched the Hulu program always wonder how to watch Hulu in Australia.

For those who have already tried to access it, may get a black screen of nada by Hulu. I would suggest not wasting your time with the free service since you will not be able to get a connection which is fast enough to watch Hulu. Hulu on the other hand is also shutting their services for the free service providers. However you still have to check your speed which should be above 0.5 Mbps and once you have obtained a US based VPN , get it connected to the network according to the details provided by the provided and you can start watching the shows.

aTV Flash (Black) for the Apple TV2 is selling for US $29.95
Now that aTV Flash has left beta, what are your thoughts on this, compared to say XBMC?

The pro's are:

• Easy installation
• Nice native interface
• UI speeds are good

Con's that I can see are:

• Not as full featured as XBMC
• The price tag

I do question whether it's worth paying for. I do like the fact that the UI is simple to use and the installation is easy. Because I am busy with full time work and my time is scarce, this does seem like a small'ish price to pay for the ease and convenience of enhancing the features of the ATV2, making it a tidy all-in-once media player.

Thoughts? Would also be good to hear from other aTV Flash users who have used this for their review and feedback.

Installation instructions

- download the installation tool for your platform (win/mac)
- java 1.5+ is required, download the latest JRE here

- enter your Apple TV's IP address or the DNS name (bonjour required) in the respective field
- enter the root password (default: alpine)
- click the button with the wrench icon (you will be asked to reboot the Apple TV after the installation)
- if you experience any trouble, contact us via email, we will help you

Usage

Within the Apps Installer menu, there are 4 submenus
Check for Updates will be executed automatically when entering the App Installer menu. This ensures that all information on your AppleTV is always up to date.
Installed Apps is available for registered users only and provides a sorted list of apps and tools that are installed on your AppleTV. All apps in this list can either be removed, re-installed or updated. Available updates will always be shown at the top of the list.
Search Apps allows you to search for apps and install them. You can also add them to your "Favourites" list which is displayed on the main screen of the App Installer entry. Available updates of favourited apps will be marked with a blue dot. Favourited apps that are installed on your AppleTV are marked with a checkmark. This allows you to easily manage plugins on your AppleTV.
Upgrade All will update all installed apps automatically at once.

The Settings menu contains 4 submenus.
Registration is used to register your account. Please not that you have to pay for the full version before you will be able to use all the functionality of Installer.
Software Update allows you to manage AppleTV osftware updates, respectively block or enable them.
Restart Main Menu restarts Lowtide
Reboot Device reboots your AppleTV

Pre-launch checklist

1. Latest version of iTunes.
2. Latest version of Seas0nPass (use links above).
3. A micro USB cable.
4. Disconnect any iPods, iPhones, and iPads from your computer.

Using Seas0nPass to jailbreak the AppleTV

Step 1: Unzip the 'Seas0nPass.zip' file and launch Seas0nPass.

Step 2: Select the 'Create IPSW' button to start the jailbreak process.

Step 3: The latest AppleTV software will be downloaded and used to create a custom 'jailbroken' software file.

Step 4: When prompted, connect your AppleTV to your Mac/PC using a micro-USB cable (leave power cable disconnected).

Once the light on the front of the AppleTV begins to flash rapidly, point the remote at the AppleTV and hold both the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Note: This step will require the silver (aluminum) AppleTV remote that was included with the ATV2. The older, white (plastic) remotes will not work.

Step 5: iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process.

Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete - your AppleTV is now jailbroken!

Note: To confirm the jailbreak was successful a (temporary) red FC logo will appear in the lower right corner of the screen - as shown below.

Using Seas0nPass for a 'tethered boot'

Some AppleTV software versions require a tethered boot. This means the AppleTV must be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup.

Note: The tethered boot steps described below are not required when using the latest 4.4.4 AppleTV software.

Note 2: The AppleTV MUST be disconnected from the computer (for at least a brief moment) after restoring in iTunes for the tethered boot process below to work properly.

Step 1: Open Seas0nPass and select the 'Boot Tethered' option.

Step 2: When prompted, connect the AppleTV to your computer via USB. Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power. Once both are connected hold both the 'MENU' and 'PLAY/PAUSE' buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Step 3: Seas0nPass will complete the tethered boot automatically. Once complete, remove the USB cable and connect the HDMI cable.

Note: Timing is key. Once the you receive the success message shown below, the USB cable should be removed and HDMI cable connected before the light on the front of the AppleTV stops flashing. (Don't worry there is ample to do this, so you don't need Superman speed).

On Monday, the U.S Copyright Office ruled that jailbreaking an iPhone or other mobile device will no longer violate federal copyright law. Some iPhone owners no doubt cheered the news, and I join them in supporting the decision.

"Jailbreak" entered the wireless lexicon soon after the iPhone first went on sale in 2007. Though some CNET readers have asked me if jailbreaking is the same as unlocking a handset, it's actually a different process. When you jailbreak an iPhone, you remove the Apple-imposed restrictions that prevent you from loading applications not sold through the iTunes App Store. Unlocking, on the other hand, only removes the restrictions that tie your iPhone to AT&T. So on the same phone, you can perform just one action or, if you prefer, both.

I welcome the decision because I've always advocated for giving customers as many choices as possible. Yes, I understand that jailbreaking carriers some risks--you void your warranty and you could wind up with a bricked phone if you're not careful--but those risks, rather than breaking the law, should be the only consequences that consumers should face.

Not surprisingly, Apple is against the move. A company rep told CultofMac yesterday that its "goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone" and that it knows "that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience." The company also warned of malware in unapproved apps, though that doesn't explain its resistance to Google Voice.

To its credit, the Apple isn't entirely off-base, so I'll save you any "Big Brother" references. After all, the company has always been about offering a consistent and tightly-controlled user experience on its products, so it's no surprise that the iPhone and iTunes App store should be any different. What's more, many consumers buy the iPhone because of that experience.

Yet, that doesn't mean that Apple's way of doing things is always the best way. In the Android Market, for example, Google exerts very few controls over the app approval process. Though some might argue that no real gatekeeper degrades the overall quality of apps, customers have more control over how they use their device. Perhaps jailbreaking offers users something in between the two extremes.

Before you run out and jailbreak, however, there are a couple points to remember. First off, if you free your phone, you'll still violate Apple's Apple iPhone Software License Agreement (PDF). Though Apple could legally go after you for that reason alone, as my colleagues Erica Ogg and Declan McCullagh wrote in their excellent FAQ, that it is unlikely to happen. Also, you'll need to jailbreak your phone again each time Apple issues a iOS update.

I've never tried jailbreaking myself, and because of the complexities involved I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. But it you feel up to the task, you'll get more freedom with your phone. And now that freedom isn't illegal.

Seas0nPass is a jailbreaking app for your 2G Apple TV that’s similar in functionality to Pwnage Tool (the simple jailbreaking tool for other iOS devices). Seas0nPass has two functions: it can create a jailbroken IPSW file that you can use to “restore” your 2G Apple TV or it can boot your jailbroken device. Really, the interface is that simple:

Yes, this does mean Seas0nPass is a tethered jailbreak, so you may want to wait for an untethered option, but you may want to consider how often you actually have to boot your Apple TV. It’s also a minor inconvenience since the Apple TV isn’t going anywhere and, presumably, you can just plug it in to your computer and quickly boot it if necessary. A tethered jailbreak with an Apple TV isn’t quite as risky as an untethered jailbreak with a mobile iOS device.

If you want to proceed, the remaining steps are simple and Seas0nPass will walk you through each one. Just like any other iOS device, you put it into DFU mode (in the case of the Apple TV, this is done by holding the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons down for seven seconds) and restore the device and restore using the created IPSW. What’s especially nice about Seas0nPass, however, is that it will pretty much automate most of this process for you. It’ll even download the latest IPSW it needs to patch so you don’t have to find it yourself or worry about grabbing the wrong version.

Once you’ve successfully completed the jailbreak, you just need to boot tethered and you’re done! So what can you do with a jailbroken Apple TV? You can install Plex and incomplete-but-functional versions of Last.fm and a web browser called Couch Surfer.

  Or you could just use a Linux or Windows box to do the same thing at half the price…?

    I’m not an apple fan, but I bought one of these because it “just works”.

    It cost me $129, delivered.

    Please tell me where I can get a Linux/Windows device which does the same thing for $65.

      Agreed. For the price, the Apple TV does a brilliant job. Just plug and play. But jailbreaking the device opens up a whole new world.

Netflix integration is one of the big selling points for the Apple TV in the US, but it isn’t an option for Australian buyers. However, you can access the streaming rentals service with a little clever hacking.

MacTalk forum poster Steeley walks through the process he used to set up his new Apple TV to act as if it is in the US. The process isn’t especially fiddly, requiring you to set up a US iTunes account and then use a special DNS service to fool your system into thinking your machine is based in the US. The method described uses a paid-for proxy; while there are free solutions that perform similar tasks, those often can become problematic.
