Apple - iTunes - Link Maker - FAQ

What Is the ITunes Link Maker?

The iTunes Link Maker is an online tool that anyone can use to generate links to any artist, song or album available on the iTunes Store.

Who Can Use the ITunes Link Maker?

The iTunes Link Maker is available to anyone who wants to link to the iTunes Store.

Do I Have to Pay to Use the ITunes Link Maker?

No, the ITunes Link Maker Is Completely Free of Charge.

To which pages on the iTunes Store can I link?

You can use the iTunes Link Maker to create a link to any artist, song or album available on the iTunes Store. You can also link directly to the iTunes download page.

What is an “itms” link? How is it different from an “http” link?

An http link is designed to open a remote web page within the default browser of your operating system. An iTMS link is built to open a remote iTunes Store page within iTunes. iTMS and http links use the same underlying protocol so if you can browse the web then you can open an iTMS link in iTunes.

How do I incorporate an iTMS link into my web page?

An iTMS link can be treated just like any other http or https link within a web page. In a standard web page an action link is formed with an action tag: Apple Given an iTMS link (say the link to Moby’s artist page), a link could be created to Moby’s artist page from a webpage by using the above iTMS link as the href for a regular action tag: Moby’s artist page When this link is clicked, Moby’s artist page in iTunes would open.

What will happen if someone clicks on an iTMS link on my website but doesn’t already have the iTunes jukebox application installed on their computer?

When a user clicks on an iTMS link, the web browser will try to detect whether the user already has iTunes installed on their computer. If they do, the user will go directly to your intended destination on the iTunes Store. If they don’t, they will automatically be directed to the iTunes download page.
To ensure this will happen, webmasters should include the code provided the first text box of Page 3 in the HEAD section of your HTML (once per page) to detect if iTunes is present or not. This will cause your links to behave intelligently if iTunes is not installed on the user’s computer.

How can I make sure the link goes to the correct page on the iTunes Store?

After the link is created, click on the iTunes badge graphic next to “Link Test” to ensure it links to your intended page on the iTunes Store.

I want to provide links to the iTunes Store not only on my web site but also via email. Is that possible?

Yes, the HMTL code generated by the iTunes Link Maker provides both an iTunes graphic as well as a direct link into the iTunes Store. If you do not want to use the iTunes badge graphic, you can delete the first part of the code starting with “itms” and delete the last part of the code after the ListId number. For example, the link for the Nirvana album “Nevermind” with an iTunes badge graphic is:

iTunes

The link without the iTunes badge graphic would be:
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=114688
