ReadyNAS as a Plex Media Server : NETGEAR ReadyNAS Community

Every now and then, a cool app makes its way to the ReadyNAS, and when that happens, you know I have to share that with you.  Last month (May 2011), the Plex team introduced the Plex Media Server support for the ReadyNAS.  For those of you unfamiliar with Plex, it’s a project built on the XBMC core and allows for super-cool presentation of movies, videos, music, and photos.  Here’s a screenshot of how the Plex app looks on an iPad with movie trailers hosted on the ReadyNAS.


So I thought I’d make a little demo video on how you can get started with Plex on the ReadyNAS.  I downloaded several HD movie trailers just to show you Plex capability to transcode one media format to another on the ReadyNAS.  You’ll see how I setup the ReadyNAS to run the Plex Media Server add-on and play a HD trailer on the iPad running the Plex app.



For convenience, the Plex add-on can be downloaded here.

The Plex app gives you the option of setting up the bit-rate and display quality based on the speed of your network, and the speed of your ReadyNAS.  Local and remote settings allow you to setup different bit-rates if you’re on a slower remote wi-fi or 3G service.

 

To access the videos remotely, all you’ll need to do is forward port 32400 on your router to the ReadyNAS IP.

Lastly, keep in mind that I used the ReadyNAS Pro 6 for the demo which I recommend if you will be transcoding HD.  Because Plex Media Server will do real-time transcoding, you will need to run it on a super fast CPU, and there’s no faster desktop NAS to do that than the ReadyNAS Pro 6.

There are three things that set ReadyNAS Remote apart from any other form of remote access — first, it’s simple to setup — there are no complicated router setups to deal with;  second, with ReadyNAS Remote, you simply drag & drop files with File Explorer or Finder over CIFS/SMB — there’s no need to learn or start a different file manager, or deal with a clunky web interface; and lastly, all file permissions and share security settings are retained –  just like you were on a LAN.

OK, there’s also item four — all data are transmitted securely over an encrypted tunnel, so your data stays away from snooping eyes as it transfers to and from the ReadyNAS.  Sounds good so far, right?

So let’s take a look at what we need to do.

First, the requirements. You’ll need to be running RAIDiator 4.1.5+ for the ReadyNAS Duo/NV+/1100/600/X6 and RAIDiator x86 4.2.4+ for the ReadyNAS Pro.

Next…

1. Install the ReadyNAS Remote software on your PC or Mac.  This is the software that makes the ReadyNAS look like it’s on a LAN to Windows or OS X, even when you’re in a different part of the world.  At the end of the installation, you will need to create a ReadyNAS Remote user ID.
2. Install ReadyNAS Remote add-on on the ReadyNAS, if it doesn’t already have it pre-installed.  You will need to give access to the ReadyNAS Remote account that’s used on Windows or Mac from Step 1.
3. Connect to the ReadyNAS from your PC or Mac, and start draggin & dropping!
